GARDEN MAINTENANCE TASKS

REGULAR CARE PROGRAMME

This program involves the team visiting your garden on a set day and frequency, to carry out the necessary care required to keep your garden looking great. Below is a general guide to some of the tasks we complete each month. Carrying out these tasks will ensure your garden is looking fantastic all year round.

March

  • Lawn Scarified to remove thatch and moss to encourage new growth
  • Lawn treated with fertilizer and moss & weed killer
  • Border work- Plants dead headed, debris & weeds removed then bare soil hoed
  • Prune winter flowering shrubs Rubus & Cornus pruned
  • Prune Roses
  • Deadhead daffodils
  • Place supports for tall perennials

April 

  • Fortnightly grass cut & edges sharpened with a streamer
  • Border work- Plants dead headed, debris & weeds removed then bare soil hoed
  • Spring flowering shrubs pruned after flowering; forsythia, chaenomeles
  • Prune lavender to encourage vigorous new growth & prevent dead centres
  • Tie in shoots of climbers Lift & divide neurones
  • Plant summer flowering bulbs; gladiolus, anemone
  • Treat weeds growing on hard surfaces with systemic herbicide

May

  • Fortnightly grass cut & edges sharpened
  • Border work- Plants dead headed, debris & weeds removed then bare soil hoed
  • Prune early flowering shrubs; kerria, spirea ‘argot’
  • Lift & divide early flowering primulas; P. denticulate
  • Treat weeds growing on hard surfaces with systemic herbicide

June

  • Fortnightly grass cut & edges sharpened with a strimmer (weekly if needed)
  • Border work- Plants dead headed, debris & weeds removed then bare soil hoed
  • Privet hedge cutting
  • Check soil moisture levels
  • Check plants for aphids and treat with insecticide if necessary
  • Remove faded flowers from rhododendron & deciduous azalea
  • Tidy hellebore foliage and remove dead flower heads
  • Treat weeds growing on hard surfaces with systemic herbicide

July

  • Fortnightly grass cut & edges sharpened with a strimmer (weekly if needed)
  • Border work- Plants dead headed, debris & weeds removed then bare soil hoed
  • Check soil moisture levels
  • Check plants for aphids and treat with insecticide if necessary
  • Prune mature deciduous shrubs; kolkwitzia, philadelphus & weigela
  • Prune wisteria; cut growth to 5 or 6 buds of the main stems to encourage next years flowers
  • Lift & divide Irises

August

  • Fortnightly grass cut & edges sharpened with a strimmer (weekly if needed)
  • Border work- Plants dead headed, debris & weeds removed then bare soil hoed
  • Privet hedge second cut
  • Buxus hedge cutting
  • Treat weeds growing on hard surfaces with systemic herbicide

September

  • Fortnightly grass cut & edges sharpened with a streamer
  • Border work- Plants dead headed, debris & weeds removed then bare soil hoed
  • Beech hedge cutting Trim conifer hedges
  • Tidy leaves

October

  • Fortnightly Grass Cut
  • Border work- Plants dead headed, debris & weeds removed then bare soil hoed
  • Cut down perennial foliage
  • Tidy leaves
  • Final privet hedge cut
  • Prune Buddleia davidii & lavateras to half way
  • Prune & tie in in climbing roses
  • Deadhead lavender
  • Plant late winter & spring flowering bulbs; galanthus, daffodils, tulip, iris Lift & store dahlias

November

  • Border work- Plants dead headed, debris & weeds removed then bare soil hoed
  • Cut down perennial foliage
  • Lift & divide perennials
  • Tidy leaves
  • Prune sambucus and Cotinus hard

December

  • Dig over any borders with poor clay soil to expose to the frost
  • Plant bare-root roses
  • Check tree ties and stakes
  • Cut back & thin bamboos
  • Lift & divide perennials
  • Tidy the last of the leaves

January

  • Move shrubs if needed
  • Remove foliage from hellebores
  • Lift & divide perennials
  • Mulch borders & apply chicken manure pellets

February

  • Move shrubs if needed
  • Remove foliage from hellebores
  • Lift & divide perennials
  • Mulch borders & apply chicken manure pellets
