Why cleaning contractors charge so much?

Why do professional cleaning contractors charge so much?

With the recent deep cleaning and sanitisation of thousands of medical facilities, schools, care homes, commercial and residential properties following the coronavirus pandemic in the UK, the staff working for commercial cleaning services providers have really proven themselves to be some of Britain’s key workers.

But there’s something important for every business owner to consider about the longer-term consequences of the pandemic. This once-in-a-lifetime event is going to change people’s perceptions of the businesses they buy from for a long time. Cleanliness and hygiene within premises will be expected by employees, staff, and visitors. In fact, having a clean business will be a strong competitive advantage.

So how much does commercial cleaning cost? It varies between region and on the tasks performed but you should expect to pay between £20 and £35 an hour plus VAT for a cleaning contractor to provide a high quality service.

If you’ve never worked with a professional commercial cleaning company before, you may feel these hourly rates are higher than you would expect, however once you see what’s included in the price you may change your mind:

  • Employee salary including NI contributions & holiday cover (Protech pay above National Living wage)
  • Working pension scheme
  • Incentive bonus scheme – (Protech pay monthly bonus for excellent performance)
  • Travel costs including vehicles, fuel, congestion and parking fees etc.
  • Materials & equipment
  • Insurance – Public & Employee liability insurance (Minimum £5 million)
  • Training & development
  • Compliance – Health & Safety, Quality, Environmental
  • Supervision
  • Uniform & P.P.E
  • Contract Management & Administration

Once you take into account the above we hope you feel the hourly rate charged is actually good value for money. However we would always advise you get a written quotation with a detailed specification before awarding a contract.

We would recommend you ensure your contractor is with trade associations such as The British Institute of Cleaning Science (BICSc) and Cleaning & Support Service Association (CSSA) as evidence of their professional credentials.

Also it is vital you ensure your contractors are Health & Safety compliant with a SSIP contractor accreditation scheme such as SafeContractor, Constructionline or CHAS.
